Romulus Folio Gallery at The Gladstone is up and running, fostering creative connections with residents of The Gladstone, and beyond. Since opening to the public on Thursday 16 April, the gallery has already shown it is a dynamic and thriving creative hub with a range of successful events. Kicking off with the Painting with Palette Knives Workshop on Sunday 27 April, participants explored how emotions can be expressed through colour and texture, using palette knives as their tool for discovery. Every painting became a unique reflection of each individual’s personal journey through colour and feeling. The atmosphere was open, supportive, and quietly transformative. Conversations blossomed naturally, and many participants shared that they felt peaceful, relaxed, and deeply grounded by the experience.
As one participant said:
Angelina connects beautifully with art and spirit. This session allowed the freedom to play and connect with self in this style. It was a beautiful technique to connect into soul and breathe into creation.
Romulus hosted an informal launch event on Friday 2 May to celebrate the opening of the gallery and welcome residents and locals into the space. It was amazing to witness the authentic connections already forming as I watched residents saying hello and sharing with Angelina how much they enjoyed the workshops, and especially the kids!
Then on Saturday 3 May, there was a special Mothers Day workshop - an opportunity for mothers and their kids share a moment to create something together. As Angelina wrote:
There was something quietly powerful about the atmosphere —a gentle, grounded energy that filled the space as women of various ages came together, some with their children by their side. Among them was a sixteen-year-old son—the eldest child in attendance—who participated with a thoughtful presence that added something quietly special to the day. Mothers and children worked side by side, sometimes collaborating, sometimes creating independently, but always connected in spirit.
On Sunday 4 May, the space hosted a fascinating conversation between Angelina and film maker Sam Galloway, exploring how they each work with light in different ways according to their artistic medium. Once again it attracted new people to Fishermans Bend, intrigued by the topic and local art activation. In case you missed it you can see a recording of the conversation on the Romulus Folio website here.
There was also more colourful. activity with kids the following week on Thursday 8 May with a special kids workshop.
Melbourne Design Week at The Gladstone
As part of Melbourne Design Week, last Saturday 17 May, Romulus launched an exhibition titled ‘Art of Surface: Texture & Colour in Spatial Design’.
Open to the public until Sunday 25 May, the exhibition explores the transformative role of contemporary abstract art in residential, commercial, and public environments. By integrating selected artworks with interior design elements, it highlights how art extends beyond decoration—shaping atmosphere, perception, and emotional connection to place. Through texture and colour, these works invite visitors to engage with surface in new ways, considering how materiality, light, and composition influence the spatial experience. The exhibition is about transformation, with the hero piece, Alter (pictured left), emerging from energy, fear, and a deep desire for change.
