Mobility engineering excellence in Fishermans Bend

Beyond its automotive heritage, Fishermans Bend continues to be a centre of excellence for engineering - with strong networks continuing around mobility. The recent Excellence Awards of the Society of Mobility Engineers Australasia (SME-A) put a spotlight on the mobility focused innovative community, past, present and emerging.

Fishermans Bend has a long history of automotive and engineering excellence. Building on this legacy, there continues to be a strong network of innovative engineers focused on excellence across mobility sectors in the area.

Welcoming Society of Mobility Engineers - Australasia (SME-A) to The Bend

Recognising the applicability of engineering skills and capabilities across the mobility sectors, the Society of Automotive Engineers - Australasia (SAE-A) recently changed their name and exchanged the A (Automotive) for an M (Mobility). The new name - Society of Mobility Engineers - Australasia (SME-A) reflects the diversity of all modes of transport where - and their mission to drive innovation across land, sea and air.  The SME-A recently moved to Fishermans Bend, joining the NTRO at their premises at Turner Street. This newly established co-location brings engineering excellence and research leadership across the mobility space under one roof.

Fostering connections

Also based at Citiport where the FB IDEAs Hub was located, iMotiv was founded by a tightly knit team known to leading the field in automotive engineering, many of whom previously worked together at the former GMH Holden site. Through the team at iMotiv, we were introduced to SME-A who then met several of the Hub members. This connection led to Hub member Philip Oefner from PCO engineering contributing to a SME-A webinar series, sharing his experience in systems engineering. The sessions are particularly relevant as they enable access to industry experts and contribute to knowledge sharing and professional development.

Celebrating excellence and women in engineering

The recent Excellence Awards of the Society of Mobility Engineers Australasia (SME-A) put a spotlight on the mobility focused innovative community in Fishermans Bend. iMotiv and PCO Engineering were in attendance, along with many others with a connection to the area.

A special award recognising a young female engineer also went to a Fishermans Bend based company - Segula Technologies.

As well as highlighting excellence in the field, the awards night highlighted the enduring foundation of mobility focused innovation in Fishermans Bend.
