Call out for community mentors to support student innovation programs
Port Melbourne Secondary College (also know as just “Port”) are once again looking for local mentors to support their upcoming student innovation programs.
Designed to build entrepreneurial thinking, develop problem-solving skills, and strengthen students’ capacity to apply design thinking to real-world challenges, every year students in Years 7 and 8 participate in a week-long program that connect them with industry mentors and guide them through the design thinking process as they explore local challenges.
In 2026, these programs will again provide students with the opportunity to learn directly from local industry experts and gain insight into how businesses and professionals approach and solve problems. Central to this experience is helping students make meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them - that is, the world of Fishermans Bend!
Like so much of innovation, the success of these programs relies heavily on the strength of partnerships. Mentors play a vital role in the programs, providing guidance, feedback and industry insights. And as a mentor, it gives you a unique opportunity to connect with young people, share knowledge, and contribute to building a stronger, more connected community.
Mentors come from diverse fields and backgrounds, and bring a breadth of perspectives and experiences - whether from niche industries or more traditional professions.
The team at Port understand that time commitments vary, and the Mentor role has been designed to be as flexible as possible. Mentors are fully supported by the College, provided with guidance prior to the program, and work alongside a classroom teacher throughout the week.
In Year 7, the Ignite program focuses on mentors designing a challenge connected to their area of expertise. Through structured checkpoints, students are guided to explore ideas, develop solutions, and think creatively. This program will run from 18 to 22 May.
In Year 8, the Evolve program places greater emphasis on student-driven challenges, with mentors supporting learners to refine their ideas, question assumptions, and consider alternative approaches. Evolve will run from 7 to 11 September.
Both programs culminate in student pitch presentations. Year 7 students present their ideas to families in the form of a showcase, while Year 8 students deliver a more formal pitch to a wider audience, showcasing their learning and growth.
FB IDEAs have previously taken part and it was an fantastic experience. Seeing the ideas and the ways of thinking of the next generation is truly inspiring and a lot of fun! Whether you are a local business, an entrepreneurs, local worker or community member - Port would love your input the program.
If you would like to learn more about the programs or if you are keen to get on board, the team at Port would love to hear from you.
